Texas Heroes Museum

The Old Fayette County Jail was opened in 1883. It was in operation for 102 years. Today it is the home of the Texas Heroes Museum, honoring Texans who have served from the time of the Texas Revolution to present day conflicts around the world to secure and defend freedom and liberty. Veterans of all conflicts are honored, as are the sheriffs that served in the old jail, Texas Rangers, modern law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, the Home Front in WWII, and others who have made personal sacrifices to make Texas a great place to live. Special features include a cell from the old jail, the Bob Lain Memorial Library of military history, replicas of weapons from the Texas Revolution to present, and the last flag to fly on the Battleship Texas.

Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Site

In 1849, German immigrant Heinrich Ludwig Kreische purchased 172 acres of land including the Dawson/Mier tomb, now known as Monument Hill. Master stonemason Kreische built a three-story house for his family. In the 1860s, he utilized the spring water from the ravine below his house and started one of the first commercial breweries in Texas. Walk the ruins of this once bustling brewery and envision how Fayette County citizens would come and enjoy a pint of Kreische’s Bluff Beer while looking out towards the beautiful Texas landscape. The Kreische Brewery and home are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
